The Influence of Military Styles on Civilian Wear

Military clothing is quite adaptable to civilian fashions. Throughout the centuries styles of clothing and accessories from the military have found their way into clothing worn by people who would never shoot a gun, much less participate in a war. Some of these are easily identifiable, but others take a little investigation to reveal their military origins.

One of the most readily recognizable military influences on fashion is camouflage clothing. Often, camouflage patterns intended for civilian use are more obviously decorative. Military camouflage, especially modern MARPAT and other 21^st century designs are highly functional and effective at breaking up a soldier’s outline from a distance or at close ranges, and in a variety of hues of terrain. Civilian camouflage often has patches reminiscent of the large swatches of color common in mid-20^th century camouflage, and often incorporate colors such as blue or orange that would be highly impractical and inappropriate for the military.

Another recognizable military influence on shoes is the desert boot. The shape and silhouette is reminiscent of the combat boots of the troops who fought in the sands of northern Africa in World War I. Modern desert boots are probably far more comfortable than those made in the 1910s and ‘20s, but the timeless look has remained.

Other aspects of military fashion are much more subtle. Khaki pants are quite common in business causal wear, and don’t seem like they have much of a military influence at all. Unlike camouflage or other militaristic styles, which are often associated with a particular subculture, khaki pants are simply seen as mainstream, conservative wear for nearly any occasion. However, they began as a part of the uniform in India during the first World War. “Khaki” means dust in Hindi, and the color was used as an early camouflage in the deserts of north Africa.

Other designs such as military style coats or overcoats are warm and cozy in winter and look sharp. When used as part of a uniform, navy pea coats and army trench coats feature medals, ribbons and other military honors make the coats quite distinctive. For civilian wear, the absence of such decorations mean that the coats appear much more conservative – they go with nearly any outfit.

The word royalty drips of long overly drawn gowns and an aristocratic air of nobility and grandeur. Similarly snipped from the same fabric is the overcoat — charging from the highest ranking officers in the military. From the influence of Napoleon’s army came the overcoat and topcoat, of the U.S. Navy came the peacoat-turned-blazer and from the famous trenches of World War I came the trenchcoat. Coats of varying lengths speak volumes to their traditional intention and purpose. Historically, the longer the coat length, the higher the officer was ranked.

These days, designer house names assemble fashion lines without end saturated with a variety of aforementioned coats. Names like Canali, Giogio Armani, Gucci, Diesel Black Gold, only to list a few. Some colossal house names retain their image of superiority and branded imaging, but their buttons are still pathetic plastic versus the authentic brass and black horn buttons of our trade which should speak to the rest of materials.

Overall, overcoats are the powerhouses of coats with passing knee-length available in hues of midnight blue and ash gray with lingering green outlines. Topcoats are the sons of overcoats, slightly shortened with high collars, slim cuts and double-breasted fronts. While peacoats are short and stylistically flexible. Usually, blazers are paired underneath overcoats or topcoats for added sophistication.

Finally, with the coming of the 20^th century, utility was rediscovered. The fierce return of all previous coats and the introduction of the now timeless trenchcoat not on the battlefield, but rather in the fashion world. With the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart plastered in various cinematic romances came the association of elegance and class.

For all the women reading, know this much: the 80’s [and Chanel’s effect on fashion in the beginning of the 20^th century] was a sartorial game changer. Considering we were riding the third wave of feminism, all the coats historically identified as “for men only” were transformed through social politics into unisex items and now readily available for the modern woman seeking classic style and utility.

So, choose to be classed higher and reverently respected merely by entering the room. Simply put, woman or man, fashion icons don’t follow, they lead the already refined.

You don’t have to be Rick Ross to keep warm in the winter. All you need is the right parka to ward off the freezing weather. Naturally, Hip Hop culture has transformed the parka into a symbol of ease in fashion, overwhelming comfort and a laissez-faire sense of style.

They were initially worn by the flight crews of the U.S. Air Force to ward off the sharp cutting winds. The versatility of parkas are inherent. Truly, they can be worn with just about any garb. Obviously, city men choose to wear their parkas over their suits as a more unrestrictive version of a coat (when you do so, just make sure it’s longer than the suit jacket). Maybe because the first creators of camouflage were artists and designers. Maybe because we love the ease and functionality of tactical clothing. Or maybe we just like to feel in charge. Whatever the reason, tactical clothing has been a long been a fascination in the fashion industry.

A soldier’s uniform stands for allegiance and honor. It denotes branch, rank, and title. But when it comes to camouflage, it means more. It can mean the difference between life and death on the battlefield. So, how did clothing intended to be invisible become a fashion staple? Let’s look at the history.

Brief History of Camouflage

There are few inventions as revolutionary to military uniforms as camouflage—which became a staple during the WWI era. Militaries first used camouflage patterning to hide, not people, but locations and equipment. When machine guns, trench warfare, and aerial photography emerged, France, as well as England, Germany, and the United States, abandoned the traditional, brighter uniform colors, and opted for a muted olive drab color. They began developing low-visibility uniforms and even formed a camouflage unit, called camofleurs, made up of people who were artists and designers in their regular lives.

In 1940, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started experimenting with camouflage uniforms and by 1943, U.S. Marines started wearing reversible beach coveralls with a “frog” pattern of green and brown. But by the end of WWII, camo lost favor once more. Select units of the Army continued to experiment with and wear camouflage throughout the 20th century, but the first official camouflage uniform didn’t emerge until the mid-’80s.

From Field to Fashion

As early as 1943, Vogue magazine picked up on the field trends and incorporated it into the fashion world. It basically just explained what military camouflage was to Vogue readers and its main function. It wasn’t until 1971 when the next article came and featured a trend collage on camo with images of girls dressed in the tactical gear. The camo craze really exploded in the 1980s, when hunters and civilians started sporting all types of green, tan, and brown apparel. The American military campaigns in Lebanon and Grenada are credited for the emerging trend, and many think it exploded due to people’s pride in their country.

Today, camouflage clothing is available in all shapes, colors, and styles—on everything from lingerie to shoes. Mainstream designers, like Christian Dior and Moschino have created camo couture. It’s really quite the fashion statement.

Camouflage has been used throughout history to hide or conceal. It’s intended to be invisible, but fashion has taken it and re-appropriated it to speak loudly.
